The Border Regiment

The 34th Foot raised in 1702 as Lucas's Regiment, the 55th Foot raised in 1757.

The 34th became the Cumberland Regiment and the 55th The Westmorland, in 1881 they became the Border Regiment.

In the Second World War the regiment became part of the 1st Airborne Brigade and became the first glider troops during the invasion of Sicily.

Another amalgamation took place in 1959 with The Kings Own Royal Regiment(Lancaster) to form The Kings Own Royal Border Regiment

There is a regimental museum at Carlisle Castle and the old Colours are laid up in Carlisle Cathedral.
