The Grenadier Guards

The Grenadier Guards were originally raised in Holland in 1656 as bodyguard to exiled Charles II. and named Lord Wentworth's Regiment.

Previous to that in 1660 John Russell's Regiment was raised in London.

In 1665 The 1st Regiment of Foot Guards was formed by merging Russells (1st Bn) and Wentworth's (2nd Bn).
