British Light Infantry Regiments
CommentsSTOP PRESS: This site is run from CANADA by ONE MAN called Mike, whose interest is that his grandfather fought with the DCLI in the Boer War and WW I. Mike has done this site for US. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Mile has a high powered job, and 3 children he has to get through school and college. He cannot afford to do everything, either in terms of time or money. He has also had to PAY out of his own pocket to keep this site going for 5 years. Now the good news (hopefully): In my various capacities, I am trying to get this site up and running in the UK. I shall be contacting all LI Association Branches, asking for their support in doing this. If YOU do NOT belong to an LI Branch, then join one now. I need YOUR support if five years of really excellent work by a Canadian called Mike, who has never been in the Light Infantry but has done it for love and as a remembrance of his Grandfather, is not to go down the pan. Mike has agreed to try and keep the site open until I can take it over. If one day you find the site closed, keep looking regularly, because we might have to close it down in Canada before we can re-open it in UK. YOUR SUPPORT IS VITAL. I hope I can count on YOU, just like we have counted on Mike for five years.

Could whoever is in charge of this, the BEST regimental site on the internet, please contact me urgently so that we can discuss the problems and hopefully find a way to keep this site open. CommentsWhat a great website, and some very interesting notes in the Guest Book. My father, Archibald William Clements (always known as "Bill") 1906-86 joined SLI about 1924 and served in Egypt, India and Hong Kong until about 1930. Still a reservist, he re-enlisted in August '39 no. 5667030 - I have his brass identity disk. He was in France during the phoney war, home on leave before Dunkirk and remained in the UK until demob. in 1945, being batman to Maj. Gen. Firbanks. Bill spoke little about his army service, and I'd love to know more.

My Great-grandfather was CSM James Cutland of the SLI, killed at Ypres in 1916 and buried at Essex Farm Cemy. CommentsI think your site is well organised and provides much important information on the regiment. I am writing a mystery novel in which somebody is trying to find out more about a Lieutenant (Somerset Light Infantry, Airborne), who was engaged in the Normandy landing and Rhine action. Where would he go to research that information. Do you have a Regimental History installation? Or record keeping on those soldiers killed in action etc.? Would appreciate any information you can provide.
CommentsMY FATHER DID HIS TRAINING WITH THE D.C.L.I AT BODMIN IN 1941,BEFORE HE JOINED THE 4TH BATT S.L.I B COMPANY,11 PLATOON. CommentsI am trying to do some research into my fathers regiment. Somerset Light Infantry. His name was Richard Samual Lloyd, known as 'Sam'. He was in the army before war broke out, and was stationed in India. He was also an army boxer. Excellent by all accounts. He was pow, and eventually came home to a hospital in Fazakerly, Liverpool, where he was medically discharged. If someone could fill in the blanks I would be most appreciative. Unfortunately my father has passed away, but would never discuss his life in the army.

CommentsI'm from the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (one of your sister regiments) Great site, a lot of interesting facts, and very well put together
CommentsI'm trying to find out which regiment my grandfather was in during WW1. His name was George Herbert Williams and he was an electrician who was born in Bristol and became a well-known local businessman in the city, trading as Rouch & Penny. I'd be grateful for any information. He was certainly involved in the clear-up operations on the French battlefields after WW1. He died in 1965. Yours, Simon Gillett

CommentsI was in 3 Para, Signals Platoon from '66 until 1970. Our OCs were Captain Walker and Captain Wilde (Oscar) any old comrades out there actually living in Australia?. Please Email me at mailto:jd_carey_98@yahoo.com
CommentsI lived in Gibraltar from 1961 to 1970 and remember the SCLI band practising on the Europa Point parade ground at six every morning, next door to our quarters! The band at that time was of a very high standard, with a very talented Musical Director (who I imagine is now retired). They regularly played a piece, I believe it was the Regimental Slow March, called something like "Little drummer (soldier, farmer's) boy", and which I have never been able to find a recording of, and am very keen to do so. I would be very grateful if anyone can let me know of a record, tape, CD, sheet music or MIDI file of the piece. I found the web site most informative and interesting. Mail to: mailto:joslevoi@www.hotmail.com
CommentsLeonard Dalton Was hoping to find the Gloucetershire Regiment 28th of Foot.
CommentsI was in the 17th Bn Light Infantry, The Parachute Regiment and then the 7th Bn. I think that the Battalion was formed from a Somerset Light Infantry Bn. We wore a dark green patch behind our Parachute Regiment cap badge, to signify our Light Infantry connection. We wore brown not black boots and also carried our rifles at the trail. Does any one know if we were originally Light Infantry battalions or were we just given the designation Light Infantry?. I know the 1st Bn The Parachute Regiment was later caller the Guards Battalion although it was not formed from a Guards Battalion. John W Donaldson mailto:donaldsn@uswest.net
CommentsI was with the 1st Battalion from November 1963 until February 1971, from Berlin thru to Lemgo. I have been to a few re-unions at West Pennard, but as I now live in Australia it is difficult to keep in touch with events. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers those days, tell a few old "war stories" and exchange rumour and information. Please drop a line on net mail at any time to mailto:drakedj@powercom.com.au . Thanks for the page, and the opportunity to perhaps contact old comrades. Ex 23965899 L/Cpl Duncan Drake.
CommentsIf anyone out there needs a copy of the Silver Bugle - The Light Infantry Magazine, I would be happy to send there details to Regimental HQ in Taunton, Somerset. I was in 1 LI from 1990 - 1994 as a Private in A Coy. I am now involved with the Army Cadet Force. If any ex members of the LI needs to contact me, do so at mailto:C.J.Palfrey@btinternet.com Thanks Pte Palfrey ex 1 LI
