I refer to last message from Terry: The provision of a Campaign Medal for British veterans of that campaign does not appear to be possible, you need to read this, http://www.veteransagency.mod.uk/medals_folder/medals_pingat.htm |

Back in National Service days I was trained along with many other West Country lads with the Durham Light Infantry, then was transferred to the Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry (SCLI), which had just undergone amalgamation. All these years later I retain strong links with the Durham lads besides my own West Country pals, this sense of belonging is vital to any combined force which is to act solidly together. I just wonder how many more amalgamations the British Army Regimental system can stand.I have three large military websites and receive dozens of Emails every day worldwide, a great many from sons and grandsons enquiring about a relatives service, of which they are very proud, all express the feeling of belonging. The New Regiments being created by the Top Brass are in my opinion eroding the military family to such a degree that I doubt whether the exercise will truly be a success. |

My great, great, great, grandfather was John MacQueen (aka: McQueen in Canada), b. ca. 1785 in Scotland. He served with pride in the 74th Infantry of Foot, seeing action in the Peninsular War for which he was awarded the Campaign Medal with 8 clasps (Toulouse, Nivelle, Pyrenees, Vittoria, Salamander, Badajoz, Ciudad, Rodrigo and Belsaco). The medal is now in the possession of one of my cousins. I do not know John McQueen's dates of service. I've checked the LDS attestation records microfiche - nothing. Does anyone know of other readily accessible public sources on the 74th with searchable data bases? I understand that the original records are at Kew, but that is not an easy or affordable search for me. John McQueen (spelling used in Canada) apparently married in Glasgow ca. 1817. He left for Upper Canada ca. 1822 with his young daughter Mary, b. 1819. His wife Catherine and another daughter (Catherine) apparently died in 1821. If anyone has access to any bdm records or cemetery access in Glasgow and comes across these names, I would greatly appreciate any information. Thanks, Cliff. Johnston Granbury, Texas |

I am trying to find out where my mother's first husband died and if the War Graves Commission record of a George Pattinson age 33 belonging to the Durham Light Infantry is actually George. ttinson). My mother is deceased. The only information I was given was that he went "missing at sea" around 1942. Sadly they were not married long only a few months I think and George's parents never acknowledged her as his wife. If I can I would like the records put straight and see my mothers name as his wife, I know this would have pleased my mother very much. |

Have found a soldier's service book belonging to James Carson Allen. Apparently he re-enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1919 and should 23rd HLI as his previous unit. Your list shows only 18Btns. Can you clarify. Thanks Bill |

IT SEEMS THAT LINE INFANTRY REGIMENTAL COMPONENT IS TO AMALGAMATE AND FORM THE NEW 1ST LI KNOCKING THE CURRENT SENIORITY BACKWARDS IS THERE A PRECEDENT OR REASON FOR THIS IT SEEMS A STRANGE THING TO DO. I ALSO FIND IT STRANGE THAT 1 PARA IS BEING REMOVED FROM THE LINE AND USED AS THE BASIS FOR A SPECIAL FORCES RANGER REGIMENT, SURELY TRADITIONALLY A LIGHT INFANTRY REGIMENT OR EXCELLENT MARKSMEN LIKE THE GREENJACKETS WOULD BE A CANDIDATE FOR THIS ROLE |

I am trying to trace my grandfather who I believe served in the Highland Light Infantry during the Second World War. I am unsure of his battalion/regiment but I believe he was a sargeant major and he was stationed for a time in both Germany and Shoeburyness. His name is James (known as Jimmy) KERR, and was probably born between 1909 and 1915. I do have several photographs and one shows him with his battalion. Does anybody know how I can find out more about him? |

A query for veterans of WW2 Normandy. Looking for info on the last moments of my Gt Uncle Cyril Brindley and his crewmate Eric Newnham. Their Sherman Tank was destroyed on 10th June 1944 during a German counter attack in St Piere France. All the crew bailed out OK Eric was hit in the legs by small arms fire and was looked after by men of the Durhan Light Infantry. Cyril was last seen running down the road in the village. They were not seen again and were presumed killed on this day. They were members of the 24th Lancers. Thanks. Brett |

Could anyone advise me if any records would have been kept on burials in India in the 1870s. My ancestor died of an illness in Dugshai,India in Jan 1872. He enlisted in the 85th Bucks Volunteers Kings Light Infantry Regiment and, when he died, was in the 1st Staffordshire Regiment of Foot. At one point he was a Sergeant, then demoted to Private and made up to Sergeant again in 1871 a few months before he died. I would love to trace his parents but no records I can find have them mentioned, apart from his wedding certificate. I have his record of death but no parent's details on there and as first mention of him is from his marriage, am at a dead end. His name was John Ramsay and father was William. He married Mary Ann Morritt and they had two children. After he died she remarried and had two more children with her second husband Thomas Honeysett, from the same regiment. They came back to England and settled in Kent. If you've got this far, thanks for reading. Hope someone can put me out of my suspense. |

A superb website – all the effort that has gone into this making site is much appreciated. I am looking for any information on my wife's granddad, John Veness (also known as Jack, Jackie Venus), who was in the DCLI in India before WWII. He rejoined the DCLI during WWII and fought in North Africa. Two of his pals in the DCLI were John (Jack) Mortimor and John (Jackie) Milton. He transferred to another unit and was injured in a tank at El Alamein – he was missing for 3 days, but was found (his leg had been blown off). He returned home, but died of his wounds in 1954. I would be grateful for any information that anyone might have. |

Is there some information about the places the soldiers lived (adresses, houses, etc) Are ther copies of the daily reports available? Is the a list with killed soldiers, etc. Please let me know where I can find this information Thanking you in advance Didi Zegers |
