Back in National Service days I was trained along with many other West Country lads with the Durham Light Infantry, then was transferred to the Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry (SCLI), which had just undergone amalgamation. All these years later I retain strong links with the Durham lads besides my own West Country pals, this sense of belonging is vital to any combined force which is to act solidly together. I just wonder how many more amalgamations the British Army Regimental system can stand.I have three large military websites and receive dozens of Emails every day worldwide, a great many from sons and grandsons enquiring about a relatives service, of which they are very proud, all express the feeling of belonging. The New Regiments being created by the Top Brass are in my opinion eroding the military family to such a degree that I doubt whether the exercise will truly be a success. |

I wish I could remember all the people in the SCLI, and later in 1 LI, with whom I had the privilege to serve. They were all remarkable and special people. I learnt so much from them and I have much to thank them for. It is invidious to mention particular people. But having read some of the letters: would Chris Matthews have been a Cpl in 1 platoon A Coy in Aden? If you are that person, I think you were in the 4 tonner when we got blown up near the Scrubber Line on our way to a night patrol. Thankfully we were all OK although the driver broke a leg and Pte Rashley got a bruised backside. If I recall correctly, when the CO appeared and asked how was morale you complained bitterly that there was sand in the rations! Humour is always best. There has been mention of Mike (Baggy)Burford. I remember him as a most lovely man who was held in enormous respect and affection by everyone in the Regiment. |

I know most went to Gib but a few of us were sent to Pontefract and then to Shrewsbury. So if you are still out there David (Ginger) Hanning or any of the other 39, I here. |

I am an ex. Member of the 1st. Bn. The Kings Own Scottish Borderer's, whom are to be acst into the military history books rather than doing what the do best, serve the interests of the Unbited Kingdom and those counries in need of the serves of such a glorious and couragous regiment. My point in commenting in you guestbook, is to say that I had the honour of associating with one of your finest as a young Junior Leader, based In Oswestry Shorpshire between 1965 -67. The man I am talking about was, Sgt Mick Burford of the S.C.L.I. a maginificent role model for any aspiring young and conciencious soldier just starting out in their career in the Army. If he, of anyone who knows Sgt Mick Burford from those far off days, please either let him know that after almost 40 yrs. he still plays a part in a man who has moved country (to get away from 'New labour' and their ludicrous policies) life and those of my family. This website is excellent interesting and amusing. I served as a young officer with the SCLI in Aden, Gravesend and Norway and when I get a moment I'll dig out some pics and submit them.
A couple of points of accuracy.
1. In the Berlin section the officer on the horse is I think Major Field not Col Howard and the handover of Col Matthews to Col Frith was at Gravesend not Berlin.
2.The SCLI cap badge did not have a red backing as it was the LI Brigade badge, the backing was adopted on the formation of The Light Infantry. We only had the red backing on our collar dogs.
3. SCLI officers did not wear cross belts. With No1 dress non-ceremonial (as pictured) a Sam Browne belt was worn, and for ceremonial an officers waist sash knotted on the right(as per regimental tradition.
I look forward to keeping up with events and memories through the site. |

I have created new pages for the SCLI Band/Bugles but to date have no material, just where are the lads who were in my opinion superb. I appeal to any ex SCLI who knows anybody who was in SCLI Band to badge them for any material they might have. They were an integral part of SCLI and I want to see them represented on this website. (Trevor did not leave Email address, I would very much like to be in touch) |

My grandfather Aurthur William Locke from Bargoed Mid Glam served with SOLI in WWII from 1940-42 before being transferred to the Ox&Bucks LI untill he was taken prisoner on 28/12/44 somewhere in Italy. He recently passed away and we are desparate to find out info on where he served in the war, where the regiment was posted etc. Any info on websites books etc would be appreciated. Unfortunately he suffered from altziemers and very little is known . A great web site which makes the younger generation feel very humble.....alot of young men gave trhier day for us to live the priveleged lives we lead. |

What a very good site, have seen quite a number of familiar names in the Archive already, but would have liked to have seen names like Rod Spracklin, Ginger Hayes, Tom Sawyer, Jonah Johnson, Gus Rashleigh, Chuck Carlyne and others I recall from Gib, Berlin & Gravesend. I went on to spend two years at 2Div HQ in Lubbecke, Germany before returning to the UK at the then School of Infantry, Warminster. Had the good fortune to meet up again with Col Waite who was my traing officer in Pontefract, Goff Edwards came to Warminster, Allister Brown, and one or two more. Bob bogan and I are very close friends and have been since I wrote a letter to the Silver Bugle, he being the only person to answer.Been to see him two or three times in the last year, but not since I lost my wife to illness. for those who recall Knook Camp, just outside Warminster, I can assure you gents that it still exists, however it is not used so much today unlike in past years. Woiuld make an ideal Adventure school for youngsters who never get the opportunity to get out of the city limits and have never seen the countryside. Take care and keep taking the pills lads, we could be in Iraq, but then the new 1st Bn LI is doing us proud. |
